Water & The Sky

We all remember Olaf in Frozen telling us that water has memory. Did you know that funny little snowman wasn't kidding? Water is everything. It's emotion, it's in love, it's about 60% of our bodies. In this blog I discuss the many spiritual aspects of water and the scientific proof connected to it.

In astrology, water is directly associated with Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio. It sometimes is associated with Aquarius too, although Aquarius is not directly a water sign, it is just known as the 'water bearer'. Rather than embodying water, Aquarius pours it - symbolically distributing knowledge, innovation, and collective awareness.

The moon is the cause for the tides in the ocean. It is the gravitational pull. If you consider that fact and then reflect on the fact of how much water is in our human bodies, you can only begin to imagine the lunar effect on the human. Our bodies respond to these subtle shifts, just as the oceans do, creating changes in mood, energy, intuition, and emotional sensitivity. When the moon is full, the water in our bodies is pulled forward, just like the tides. This explains why you may struggle to sleep on a full moon, and why your dog/cat/animals seem to go a little wild.

But it goes deeper than that, as the moon moves through the constellations (the zodiac signs) we are able to get direct insight on how the moon is affecting our internal world and emotions. It filters its energy through different archetypes, giving us insight into how our inner world is being shaped. Each lunar transit highlights a different emotional theme, stirring specific feelings, instincts, and subconscious patterns. By tracking the moon’s movement, we gain a deeper understanding of our emotional cycles, our intuitive rhythms, and the ways we are constantly shifting and evolving beneath the surface. See this blog I wrote on the Moon in Cancer.

There are many different cultural understandings of this. In Te Ao Māori, the Maramataka - the traditional Māori lunar calendar, guides planting, harvesting, fishing, energy levels and spiritual practices. Matariki, the Māori New year, is celebrated when the Pleiades rise in the winter sky, marking a time of remembrance, renewal and connection to ancestors.

Jewish holidays, or even Shabbat, are tied to the heavens and are usually marked to begin by 3 stars appearing in the sky, an ancient way of syncing sacred time with the natural world. Most if it not every culture or religion has some sort of major significance surrounding the lunar calendar or the stars. From Islamic lunar months, to Hindu festival timings, to Indigenous star lore, to the astrological traditions of ancient Mesopotamia and Greece - humanity has always looked upward for guidance. The sky has been our calendar, our compass, our mythic storyteller, and our spiritual mirror.

Water researcher Veda Austin inducted a study on the consciousness and memory that water holds. She displays images to the water or even speaks to it and then crystallises it. She then reveals the outcome of the crystallised water. See the video below and check out her Instagram in general - it's quite amazing!

Water is the bridge between science and spirit, the physical and the cosmic. It responds to the moon’s pull, carries memory, and mirrors the emotional tides within us. Across cultures and throughout history, humanity has looked to the stars, the lunar cycles, and the rhythms of nature to understand ourselves more deeply. Water has always been at the center of that connection. It’s the element that reminds us we are both biological and mystical beings, shaped by gravity, guided by intuition, and forever in conversation with the sky above us.
